Bookmarks are a fantastic tool for keeping webpages available at the touch of a button. They not only offer a way to save pages to read later, but also allow you to open web-based workstations quickly, if you have a suite of sites or programmes you use for specific jobs (such as a CMS, your website, user portals, and so on).
That said, if bookmarks aren’t properly kept and organised they can lose all their inherent benefits – and actually take longer to rummage through than if you were to find and load the websites manually. That’s why well organised folders are essential for an effective bank of favourites.
Creating folders within your favourites is simple enough, but the process is slightly different depending on the hardware and Operating System you’re using.
From a desktop, hold Ctrl + Shift + O (Command + Shift + O for Mac) to open your Bookmark Manager in a new tab. Here you’re likely to see a few folders already, for those saved on the Bookmark Bar, on Mobile, and ‘Other’.
Next, click on the three vertical buttons to the top-right of the page to open the Organize menu, where you can create new folders, new bookmarks, or import/export them en masse.
You can move existing bookmarks into your new folder with a simple drag and drop.
Your bookmarks will be organised chronologically, with the oldest at the top. However, you can choose to have them run alphabetically if you’d prefer – simply tap the three dots again and select Sort By Name.
If you already have the Bookmark Bar enabled on your browser, just right click on it to add pages or folders, or to open Bookmark Manager.
The process is incredibly straightforward on iOS (tap Bookmarks on the Chrome homepage then New Folder at the bottom of the list) – but not so simple on Android. Here, you need to open the menu by tapping the three dots in the upper right-hand corner, then tap Bookmarks. From here you select one of the bookmarks you want to drop into your new folder, then tap Move To and then New Folder. Once this is done, you can select other bookmarks to move, and follow the steps above – but moving them to your newly created folder instead of creating new.
