Here are 10 great ways to work smarter with your iPad, a must read for power users who want to get the most out of their devices. Whichever model you’re using, as long as it’s running iOS9, the following tips will guarantee a slicker experience.
-
Remove web page clutter
The Reader feature in Safari makes articles easier to reader. You’ll find the Reader button in the search field – it’s a symbol consisting of four horizontal lines representing lines of text. Tap this symbol just to see the text and images without other clutter such as flashing ads, links and polls.
-
Move it over (split screen)
See another app without leaving the one you’re using. Swipe from the right edge of the screen to display a vertical list of open applications. Then simply tap the first app to return to it.
-
Get to a setting quickly
Can’t find the setting you’re looking for? Don’t worry. You don’t need to memorise the entire menu system because the Search Settings field allows you to pinpoint the item you’re looking for.
-
Make a note of that
In Safari, Maps and many other apps, you can save a note about what you’re looking at without leaving the app itself. Tap the share icon, then tap Notes.
-
Reduce eye strain at night
Your iPad can automatically alter display colours for better viewing at night. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness and schedule Night Shift to turn on from sunset to sunrise or configure your own custom schedule.
-
Keep notifications off the Lock screen
If you want an app’s notifications to appear only when your iPad is unlocked, go to Settings > Notifications. Tap the app, then turn off Show on Lock Screen.
-
Find text on a web page
Just like the CTRL+F function offered by other web browsers, you can search for text on a web page you’re viewing in Safari. Firstly, tap the share icon – that’s the rectangular box with an upward arrow coming out of it. Then click Find on Page and enter some text. Use the arrows to find the next match.
-
Let Siri do the maths
Just ask “How much is 35% of 250?”. Siri can add, subtracts and divide too.
-
Have your iPad speak to you
Your iPad can speak selected text such as iMessages or the entire screen. Explore these options in Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech. More information can be accessed in the iPad User Guide, which is a free download in the iBooks Store.
-
Take a screen shot
This is a really useful feature that many are still unsure how to use. To save the current screen as a picture, simply press the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time. The image will be stored in the Screenshots album under Photos.
